P. Narayanakurup, born on September 5, 1934, in Haripad, Alappuzha district, is a distinguished literary figure with a multifaceted career. Having earned post-graduate and BA degrees in English literature, he embarked on a teaching profession in 1956. His professional journey led him to the Central Secretariat Service in 1957 and the 'Kerala Bhasha Institute' from 1971 to 1975. Throughout his career, he held notable roles, including Editor in the Central Information Service, Guest Editor for 'Vishwavignanakosam' and 'Sarvavignanakosam' Institute, Vice-President of 'Sanskar Bharati, Agra,' and a State Patron of 'Thapasya.' P. Narayanakurup served in the Central Service until his retirement in 1986.
His literary contributions are extensive, with significant poetry collections such as 'Astramalyam,' 'Hamsadhwani,' 'Apoornathayude Soundaryam,' 'Naranathu Kavitha,' 'Kurumkavita,' 'Bhupalam,' 'Nishagandhi,' 'Ammathottam,' 'Samam Sangharsham,' 'Syamasundaran,' and 'Ayrkulamathi Venna.' In addition to poetry, he has authored critical books, including 'Kaviyum Kavithayum', 'Vritha padanam', 'Kavya Bimbam' and 'Kavitayile Realism'. P. He has been the recipient of several prestigious awards throughout his illustrious career. In 1986, he was honored with the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for his outstanding contribution to literature, specifically for the work 'Kaviyum Kavithayum.' This recognition was followed by another Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1990 for his exceptional poem 'Nishagandhi.' In 1990, the 'Odakkuzhal Award' acknowledged his poetic excellence, particularly for 'Nishagandhi.' 1996 brought the 'Kerala Panini Award, highlighting his significant impact on literary endeavors.
In 2002 he was awarded a state award for Children's Literature, titled 'Kolappan Pandi Thattan.' The accolades continued with the 'Ulloor Award' in 2005 for 'Samam Sangharsham,' showcasing his versatility in literary expression. In 2014, he received the esteemed 'Vallathol Award,' further affirming his enduring influence on Kerala's literary landscape. His contributions were also recognized with the 'Thapasya Sanjayan' award. The pinnacle of his achievements came in January 2022 when he was conferred the prestigious 'Padma Shri Award, marking a meaningful recognition of his exceptional literary contributions.
