Madampu Sankaran Namboothiri, popularly known as 'Madampu Kunjukuttan,' was a versatile figure in the literary and cinematic realms. He was born on June 23, 1941, in Kiralur, Thrissur district. Renowned as a writer, screenwriter, and actor, he significantly contributed to Malayalam literature and cinema.

His notable screenplays include 'Deshadanam', 'Karunam', 'Saphalam', 'Gourisankaram' and 'Makalkku'. In addition to his impactful work in cinema, Kunjukuttan authored several novels, such as 'Aswathamavu', 'Avighnamasthu', 'Mahaprasthanam', 'Thonnyasam', 'Bhrashtu', 'Entharo Mahanubhavulu', 'Nishadam', 'Pathalam', 'Aryavarthanam' and 'Amrithasya Puthrah'. The novel 'Mahaprasthanam' earned him the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Best Novel in 1983.

Madampu Kunjukuttan's brilliance extended to the cinematic sphere, winning the National Film Award for Best Screenplay in 2000 for his work on the film 'Karunam,' directed by the acclaimed Malayalam filmmaker Jayaraj.

Tragically, Madampu Kunjukuttan succumbed to COVID-19 on May 11, 2021, in Thrissur. His legacy lives on through his profound contributions to literature and cinema, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Kerala.
